Position: Ophthalmic Assistant
Organization: State Health Society, Bihar (SHSB) / Bihar Swastha Vibhag
Overview: We are seeking qualified Ophthalmic Assistants to support eye-care services across government health facilities. The role involves assisting ophthalmologists and optometrists in outpatient and community eye-care activities, performing preliminary examinations, supporting diagnostic procedures, maintaining clinical records, and ensuring patient flow and counseling.
Responsibilities
- Assist ophthalmologists/medical officers during eye examinations, minor procedures, and clinical assessments.
- Conduct preliminary vision screening, refraction support, and basic eye assessments as per facility protocols.
- Support diagnostic procedures and maintain readiness of ophthalmic instruments and equipment.
- Maintain patient records, registers, and reporting formats as required by the program/facility.
- Provide patient guidance and counseling on eye health, treatment plans, follow-ups, and preventive care.
- Support community/outreach activities aligned with public health eye-care initiatives (e.g., screening camps) as assigned.
- Ensure infection prevention practices, cleanliness of instruments, and safe handling of consumables.
- Coordinate with nursing, registration, and pharmacy teams to ensure smooth patient services and referrals.
- Participate in document verification and compliance processes as required by the employer.
Requirements
- Education: I.Sc. (Biology or Mathematics) or 10+2 with Biology or Mathematics.
- Professional Qualification (any one):
- 2-year Diploma in Optometry; OR
- 2 years of training as an Ophthalmic Assistant at a recognized Government Hospital as per NPCB guidelines; OR
- 2-year Diploma in Ophthalmic Assistant from a Government/Private/Semi-Government institute recognized by the Government of Bihar.
- Age (reference as per notification): Minimum 21 years; upper age limits vary by category and applicable rules.
- Ability to work in a clinical environment with patient-facing responsibilities.
- Comfort with maintaining accurate records and following standard operating procedures.
- Basic computer skills for data entry/reporting are preferred.
- Strong communication skills, empathy, and teamwork.
