Position: Legal Aid Officer

We are seeking a knowledgeable and service-oriented Legal Aid Officer to support access to justice initiatives by providing legal assistance, guidance, and coordination for eligible individuals. This role involves client interaction, legal documentation, coordination with internal and external stakeholders, and supporting case preparation and representation workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal information, initial guidance, and procedural support to eligible applicants seeking legal aid.
  • Conduct client intake interviews, assess eligibility, and document case details accurately and confidentially.
  • Assist in drafting, reviewing, and organizing legal documents such as applications, affidavits, notices, petitions, and supporting annexures.
  • Coordinate with advocates, legal services authorities, court staff, and relevant departments to facilitate timely case progression.
  • Maintain case files, registers, and digital records; ensure documentation is complete and audit-ready.
  • Support preparation for hearings/interviews by compiling case briefs, timelines, and required enclosures.
  • Track case status, deadlines, and outcomes; provide updates to stakeholders as required.
  • Promote legal awareness through community outreach, help desks, or informational sessions where applicable.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable rules, confidentiality standards, and ethical guidelines.
  • Contribute to reporting and data collection on legal aid activities, caseloads, and service outcomes.

Requirements

  • Law degree (LLB or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
  • Working knowledge of court procedures, legal drafting, and documentation practices.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to explain legal concepts clearly to non-legal audiences.
  • High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple cases/tasks simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with standard office tools (word processing, spreadsheets, email) and comfort with case tracking systems.
  • Demonstrated integrity and ability to handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with advocates, administrative staff, and community stakeholders.
  • Preferred: Prior experience in legal aid, litigation support, court/tribunal work, or public service/legal services programs.
