Position: Ophthalmic Assistant (Netra Sahayak)

We are seeking a skilled and patient-focused Ophthalmic Assistant (Netra Sahayak) to support ophthalmologists and eye-care teams in delivering high-quality clinical services. The role involves assisting with eye examinations, performing preliminary tests, supporting community eye health initiatives, maintaining clinical documentation, and ensuring adherence to applicable clinical protocols and quality standards.
Responsibilities
- Assist ophthalmologists/optometrists during outpatient clinics and eye examinations.
- Perform preliminary ophthalmic assessments and diagnostic support tasks as per training and protocols (e.g., visual acuity checks, basic screening support, patient history collection).
- Prepare patients for examination procedures and provide clear instructions to ensure comfort and cooperation.
- Support refraction/optometry workflows as applicable to the facility and scope of practice.
- Maintain and update patient records, registers, and documentation accurately.
- Support infection prevention and control practices, including sterilization and safe handling of instruments.
- Assist in organizing patient flow, appointment coordination, and counseling support for follow-up care.
- Participate in community eye health activities, screening camps, and programmatic initiatives aligned with public health guidelines.
- Ensure equipment readiness, basic troubleshooting, and coordination for maintenance/calibration when required.
- Adhere to all departmental SOPs, confidentiality requirements, and applicable government/organizational guidelines.
Requirements
- Education: I.Sc. (Biology or Mathematics) or 10+2 with Biology or Mathematics.
- Professional Qualification (any one):
- 2-year Diploma in Optometry, or
- 2 years of training as an Ophthalmic Assistant at a recognized Government Hospital as per NPCB (National Programme for Control of Blindness) guidelines, or
- 2-year Diploma in Ophthalmic Assistant from a Government/Private/Semi-Government institute recognized by the Government of Bihar (or equivalent recognition as applicable).
- Strong patient-handling skills with a compassionate, service-oriented approach.
- Ability to follow clinical protocols, maintain accurate records, and work effectively in a team environment.
- Comfort working in high-volume clinical settings and/or outreach programs.
- Basic computer literacy for documentation and dashboard/portal-based workflows is preferred.
